Participants make commitments at annual day of prayer

The Evangelization Commission once again hosted its ‘Day of Prayer and Fasting for the Nation’ on February 24.

This year, the commission decided to shift the day’s venue to St Charles RC Church, Tunapuna from Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Carapichaima. The commission wants to place on record its appreciation and gratitude to Fr Matthew d’Hereaux, former parish priest of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, for hosting us previously and to Fr Ian Taylor, parish priest of St Charles, who welcomed and fully supported us.

Due to the change of venue, the commission included groups and parishes from the Suburban and Eastern Vicariates. These included representatives from St Theresa’s, Barataria; St John the Baptist, San Juan; Holy Family, Mt Lambert; St Michael’s, Maracas St Joseph; Eternal Light Community, Tunapuna; Holy Trinity, Arouca; and  People of Praise Community, Arima.

Also involved in the organisation and conduct of the day’s activities were Teams of Our Lady, Friend of Jesus Intercessory Group, and GRACE Music Ministry, a partner from the inception of the event.

The day began with a welcome and explanation of the format by Peter Timothy, Episcopal Delegate for The Evangelization Commission, and Peter Forde of GRACE.

This was followed by a video-recorded opening address by Archbishop Jason Gordon, who was out of the country at the time. The message was showed before Mass.

Fr Cornelius Phillip FMI was the main celebrant and he led the participants in a lively celebration of the liturgy. This set the tone for the day and the other activities which followed. This included:

Repentance and intercession for the nation, led by Eternal Light Community

Intercession for Youth, led by the National Alpha Youth Implementation Team

Intercession for crime and violence led by Friends of Jesus Intercessory Group and Holy Trinity, Arouca.

Prayers for the pro-life ministry led by Emmanuel Community

Prayers for men’s ministry led by Keith Patrick of Chaguanas Men’s Ministry

At 3 p.m. GRACE led the gathering in the recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy followed by a presentation conducted by Deacon Derek Walcott

One addition to the Day of Prayer’s activities was a commitment slip with various options of prayer. Each participant was asked to commit to some form of prayer for the nation for the rest of the year. The Evangelization Commission wishes to thank all participants who registered their commitments and we look forward to your continued support.

As the day ended, participants left with a sense of encountering God by being in his presence and responding to a call to seek his face imploring his intercession not only for our nation of Trinidad and Tobago but for the world.
