The Parent Teacher Action Team (PTAT) of St Gabriel’s Girls’ RC Primary hosted a walk-a-thon on Saturday, May 12 themed Restoring Family Values, Reclaiming Trinidad and Tobago. The streets of San Fernando were ablaze with sounds of gospel music and the voices of the praise and worship warriors—the pupils, parents and teachers of the school.
The theme was chosen to highlight the need to curb the violence in society and call for a safer Trinidad and Tobago for the children of the country. The day of the walk-a-thon was specially chosen because it was the day before Mother’s Day, a significant time to put the spotlight on the spiralling levels of violence against women and the added injustices and inequalities women face such as domestic violence and workplace bias. The event also celebrated the power in women to create change.
The day’s activities began in the schoolyard at 7 a.m., with participants being blessed by Deacon Roy Raghunanan. Opening remarks were delivered by Principal Carlene Voisin and PTAT President Patricia De Leon-Henry. The PTAT would like to sincerely thank the principal, teachers, parents, pupils and other stakeholders of St Gabriel’s for making the event such a resounding success. – Story and photos submitted by the PTAT
