Holy Cross parish in Santa Cruz held its third annual Calypso competition on Friday, February 9 at the church’s compound ‘on de hill’. The event started at 8 p.m. and was a blast as usual.
This year there were only three competitors compared to last year’s seven, but the quality of the compositions was high. The competitors were: Camille Rajnauth – De Mighty Mom, singing ‘De whole truth’; Marlene Eligon – OMG, singing ‘Papa God’; and Yasmin Britto singing ‘Carnival Come back again’.
Yasmin was the youngest competitor, but had the crowd of parishioners and visitors singing to her refrain heartily. She received her first prize and a challenge trophy. OMG came in second and Mighty Mom placed third. The judges were Mrs R Persad and Ms A Ojoe.
After the competition, our parish priest Fr David Khan and the sacristan did an extempore war, with Fr Khan coming in second position. The audience was in stitches as our Master of Ceremonies turned comedian had the jokes coming fast and furious. Then the rains came, while everyone was dancing and enjoying the music of the season supplied by DJ Reyes. – Angela Ojoe
