Statement from Vicar General Msgr Christian Pereira on the October 19 appointment of Archbishop-elect Jason Gordon
As Vicar General, and Administrator of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, allow me to add my personal congratulations and welcome to Msgr Jason Gordon as the new archbishop for our archdiocese.
I recognise his experience in St Vincent and in Barbados would have allowed him the opportunity to prepare for this major responsibility. I am sure that he would have the support of many of the faithful, religious and clergy as he embraces the challenge of serving this great archdiocese.
He will be called upon to deal with many challenges among which I can list at least five:
(i) the path for true Catholic education
(ii) addressing the social decay in our present society by providing the moral and spiritual leadership that will regenerate the culture
(iii) rebuilding family life with the help of the Archdiocesan Family Life Commission
(vi) strengthening the faith security of our Catholic community and
(v) embracing the call of the ecumenical and interfaith community for strong and focused leadership.
I welcome Msgr Jason Gordon and assure him of our prayer and best wishes as he builds on the legacy of men like Archbishops Anthony Pantin, Edward Gilbert and Joseph Harris. We look forward to the new era in the evolution of our archdiocese.
Let me also express thanks to Archbishop Joseph Harris for his service to the archdiocese as Co-adjutor and then as Archbishop since his installation December 8, 2011. He leaves his own special legacy including two pastoral letters on mercy and hospitality which still have a vital place in the life and mission of our archdiocese. May the Lord grant him his heart’s desire as he moves into a new phase of his life.
