The Family Life Commission’s Children Are Gift (CAG) programme was held September 16 at the South Oropouche RC Primary on the invitation of Principal Ursula Francois.
Richard Smith of the Family Life Unit (FLU) at Assumption RC, South Oropouche facilitated the session on the role of father, safe male figures, and fathering in children’s lives. Using an excerpt from calypsonian Winston ‘Explainer’ Henry’s ‘He’s Gone Away’ to begin the session, he encouraged participants to share on the memory of their fathers and in the end asked participants to complete the statement – I used to think, but now I know.
One participant shared that she used to think that children didn’t need their fathers but now she knows that she can be the best mother and allow the children’s father to spend time with them without her supervision.
The CAG programme is based on the Parenting and Family Life Manual produced by the AFLC through the generosity of Republic Bank Limited’s ‘Power to Make a Difference’ programme.
