Continue collaborating – outgoing SC president

The outgoing president of SIGNIS-Caribbean (SC) has encouraged regional Church communicators to continue the process of collaboration.

In her final address at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting in Barbados, Nuala Menezes referred to a presentation made by Sr Angela Ann Zukowski MHSH, guest presenter at the 2016 AGM. She said “We must, as Sr Angela Ann advised, stop operating in silos. As communicators, we must become collaborators. Stop working only with our ‘friends’ and work with our people. Give up looking for the flaws and seek out the talents. If we can manage to do this our dioceses will become ‘wow’ places.”

Menezes, who represented the diocese of St George’s-in-Grenada and served as president for two consecutive four-year terms, delivered her final president’s report at SC’s tenth AGM, September 5–7. Elections for a new president were held on the final day. Delegates came from Barbados, Belize, Grenada, Jamaica, St Vincent & the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago and Antigua. Representatives from SIGNIS-Latin America were invited and attended.

Menezes gave a recap of the activities of the past years, highlighting the decision to form an association of Caribbean Catholic communicators with the name ‘SIGNIS Caribbean’. Launched August 21, 2007, SC brings together Catholic communicators from territories of the Antilles Episcopal Conference in a network that seeks to plan and implement Church communication strategies best suited to the people and cultures of the Caribbean.

Commenting on SC after ten years, Menezes said “Can anyone dispute the fact that this is the work of God? We accomplished what the West Indies Federation could not do. We have kept the Caribbean region together by prayer, humility, patience, perseverance and a determination to succeed.”
She added, “As I leave this office at the end of this AGM, I know that Signis Caribbean is in good capable hands. Any member present will be the right choice to keep this organisation going. It only takes love, faith, humility, patience and a great deal of enthusiasm. It’s the work of the holy spirit, so all we need to do is listen.”
