St Gabriel’s Girls’ RC School, San Fernando, joined the global community on March 20 in advocating the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down Syndrome by participating in the “Lots of Socks” initiative.

Standard 2 teacher Vickybeth Tom and some of her pupils wore matching socks.

Teachers and pupils were encouraged to wear brightly coloured, long, printed, even mismatched socks to highlight awareness of those with Down Syndrome.

The girls were given some facts about the disorder to help them better understand and appreciate persons with Down Syndrome.

St Gabriel’s principal Tabita Auguste emphasised that persons with Down Syndrome could attend school, work, participate in decision making and contribute to society in many wonderful ways. She added that they should be included in all aspects of life and afforded independence and a satisfactory life through love, respect and care.
