Fr Henry CharlesIt is with the deepest sense of loss that the Archdiocese of Port-of-Spain mourns the death of Fr. Henry Charles, PhD, parish priest of St. Mary’s, Mucurapo. He died suddenly this morning of a heart attack. He was discovered in his study after he did not come to the church for a scheduled funeral. Fr. Charles was born on 9th January 1944 and was ordained priest by Archbishop Anthony Pantin on 27th June 1971. Fr. Charles was a past student and Island Scholarship Winner of St. Mary’s College. He studied for the priesthood in Ireland, at the local seminary of St. John Vianney and the Gregorian University in Rome. He had a doctorate in ethics and was Rector of the Regional Seminary. After his tenure as Rector, he studied civil law and was admitted to practise at the local bar on 13th January 2001. One of the finest minds in the Caribbean Church today, he had a unique gift for friendship and used his many talents to explore critically many aspects of life which made his homilies and lectures life-giving experiences for those who listened. He is survived by a priest-brother, Herbert Charles, a member of the St. Mary’s College community and parish priest of St. Patrick’s Church, Newtown. Further information about Fr. Charles’ life and funeral arrangements will be available tomorrow.
