|…And the work continues – Sep 16|

…And the efforts to keep the Second Pastoral Priority – Revitalising Catholic Culture and Identity – on the diocese’s front burner continue.
An effort aimed primarily at getting children to better understand the need to pray, and to do so in ways that are pleasing to God, is now being undertaken by the Synod Implementation Committee (SIT). It will also serve well the needs of a large majority of adult Catholics, many of whom may have forgotten some of the common prayers they used in former times.
The project takes the form of a four-fold colour prayer brochure, titled “This is our Faith”, in which all the everyday prayers are presented in an attractive manner. It will soon be made available to all children in our primary schools, as well as at parish churches.
There are numerous prayers in the document, including the Apostles Creed, the Lord’s Prayer; Hail Holy Queen; the Beatitudes; Morning Offering; Angelus; Hail Mary and Prayer to Jesus Christ Crucified.
Additionally, there is also information about the Precepts of the Church; the Sacraments; the Cardinal Virtues, the Seven Deadly Sins, the Corporal Works of Mercy and the Spiritual Works of Mercy, as well as the simple prayers used before and after meals.
In less than a month, there will be the observance of the annual Respect for Life Week, which will run from Saturday, October 6, through Saturday October 13. The event will open with the Sir Ellis Clarke Memorial Conference at the Assumption Parish Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. and close with a panel discussion on certain aspects of the Catechism.
The co-ordinator of the Week indicated that the theme was linked to the fact that Pope Benedict XVI will launch The Year of Faith on October 11, which also marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council and the 20th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Furthermore, the Synod of Bishops, which will convene in Rome from October 7 through 28, will focus on the theme; The New Evangelisation for the Transmission of the Christian Faith.
