Following is a statement from Archbishop Joseph Harris issued August 19 on the North West disaster (flooding) on August 11, 2012

We have all been shocked at the disastrous flooding and landslides that resulted from more than four hours of rainfall in North West Trinidad. “The Archdiocese has been generous during the time of natural disaster in helping persons to begin the recovery process.” Once again we must listen to and respond to the cry of those in need.

Today the Special Relief Fund Collection is taken up to support the disaster victims in need of emergency assistance. Through your generosity we can cast the peace of Christ upon the nation.

Special Collection in Parishes

In addition to the regular Sunday Collections, I authorize a Special Collection (second collection) for the residents in the affected areas on the weekend of September 1-2, 2012. Please be generous. Contributions can be made by chequepayable to ‘The R.C. Archbishop of POS – Relief Fund’ or direct deposits at any Branch of Republic Bank A/C # 340509052501. Donations by cheque must be sent to the Finance Office of the Chancery by Monday September 10, 2012.

Let us continue to pray for those affected by the recent natural disaster.

Most Reverend Joseph Harris

Archbishop of Port of Spain

August 19, 2012

Almighty and powerful God we know that all things work together for good for those that love you (Rom 8:28).

We ask you, Lord, to heal the wounds inflicted by the recent disaster in Trinidad and Tobago, broken families, hurting individuals, devastated infrastructure, and shattered communications.

We prayer that our leaders will be inspired to sustain their people at this time and to engender a deep spirit of solidarity, so that a new spirit of caring, forgiveness and honesty will be born again in our nation.

May we, as a united people, move with clear purpose to do our part in Trinidad and Tobago to help rebuild the people and the nation of Trinidad and Tobago.

We make this prayer through Jesus Christ, Lord of all. Amen
