A late start to synod implementation has not diminished the enthusiasm of parishioners in the St Anthony’s Parish of Diego Martin, who are steadfastly working to achieve the required goals.

St Anthony’s, which comprises the Church of the Nativity in Crystal Stream and St Augustine in Cameron, formed its Parish Implementation Team (PIT) six weeks ago, following a presentation culled from information provided by Fr Joe Harris during a training session entitled “The Synod Mandate – Preparing for Mission” which he conducted on September 5.

The PIT is headed by Teresa Dookharan and includes parish priest Fr Leo Donovan as well as 13 other members.

But even before the PIT was finally constituted, the Working Group had been using the Parish Update Newsletter since June to inform and advise parishioners of Synod decisions and implementation, the clustering of parish groups under the three pastoral priorities and the formation of the PIT and its attendant duties and responsibilities.
In related activities, the parish has been conducting Evangelium sessions since April. These will end later this month. The Alpha Group began an eight-week Catholicism 201 programme on October 12 and because of its success, it is expected to be repeated next year.

Meanwhile the Family Life Unit (FLU) has been busy for more than a year having hosted weekly reviews of Theology of the Body over an eight-week period. A survey of the parish’s needs was done last November to inform the priorities for the FLU, but the results of that exercise are still to come.

The youth ministry is now making plans to institute a Youth Mass and is also planning some Christmas activities. Other ongoing activities include an RCIA programme, First Communion and Confirmation classes, while a Life in the Spirit Seminar is currently in progress.

In a related matter the “Train the Trainer” sessions in preparation for the completion of the -Parish Pastoral Plan, continued in the Southern Vicariate last weekend. Every parish was represented at the session which was held at St Benedict’s, La Romaine Church Hall. Also present were Monsignors Jason Gordon and Allan Ventour.

The next session, which would have accommodated representatives of the Surburban Vicariate was held at the St Theresa’s Parish Hall in Malick, yesterday, while the session for the Northern Vicariate is scheduled for Wednesday, November 4 at 5.30 p.m. at Living Water Centre on Frederick Street, Port of Spain.
